I am a playwright who brings the lives of women to the stage with poetry, spoken word, original songs, choreography, projection of original film and images, and relational stories. In my practice, I imagine the conversations women have when faced with crushing realities. I write characters based on Sarah Gallick’s Big Book of Women Saints and extract the emotional truths from their lives, adapting the realities to create an experience for the stage. What the women have in common is that they are rural (based in the fourth district of Iowa, specifically), courageous, traumatized, and zany. I’m also a documentary filmmaker and the use of projections and visual elements often add depth to the audience experience, though I also have minimalist, “music stand” shows. I believe the stories of a woman’s trauma, love, and pain, laced with humor, can illuminate the truth. Hence, I make plays that express these elements through many forms of performing art. Words and sensual experience mold the entire mess into a live theater experience.
