Bio
Miriam Alarcón Avila is a Mexican photographer, visual, multimedia, and storytelling artist, based in Iowa. Her mission is to pursue her bliss by creatively producing strong works of art that leave a legacy for a better, sustainable, and inclusive world.
Her personal works center on highlighting the life and challenges of Latinos, Latinas, Latinx, immigrants, and minorities in the US. She wants to inspire, connect, encourage, educate, support, and help others experience and engage with a borderless world.
She began making photographs as a teen inspired by her colorful Mexican culture. In 2002 she emigrated to Iowa, intending to study photography, where she began working with digital media to document the work of musicians and performance artists while maintaining the goal of embracing and displaying the cultural diversity of Iowa.
In 2012 she began creating public art installations ranging from sand sculptures, pumpkin carvings, and projection mappings to murals.
In July 2017, she received a grant from the Iowa Arts Council to start the work on the “Luchadores Immigrants in Iowa” project, a photo documentary project to give new Iowans a voice and share their challenges as immigrants of Latino descent.
Her work reflects a deep commitment to storytelling and social impact, using her artistic talents to amplify voices and create connections across cultures.
Miriam’s work has been exhibited and awarded in different organizations, universities, museums, and galleries across the Midwest, like Des Moines Art Center, Hancher Auditorium, Western Illinois University, and Drake University. Including the 2023 Tanne Award Recipient, and the 2022 Iowa Artists at the Des Moines Art Center. She is also a Member of Women Photograph and Photographers Without Borders and Miriam is one of the 41 contributors to the book “Somewhere We Are Human” Edited by Sonia Guiñansaca and Reyna Grande and published in English and Spanish by Harper Viabooks.
