I am a teaching artist from Ames, lowa who works in multiple media. I am passionate about the value of creativity and lifelong learning. I’m especially fascinated by age-old processes with a modern twist, such as lampwork and paper marbling. These two art forms have many things in common, aside from their long history; both allow me to play with colors, pattern, visual texture, mark making, and negative space, as well as surface tension and chemical reactions. My artwork (each glass bead, each marbled paper) is created one at a time and many pieces are one of a kind.
JEWELRY: I create jewelry which features my own glass beads, handcrafted metal focal pieces, natural gemstones, enamels, and precious metals. I use a small torch and MAP gas to create the glass beads and the components used in the beads (including custom twisted cane and frit). I anneal the beads in a kiln for durability. Fine silver metal work is created with metal clay using simple tools and a kiln.
PAPER ARTS (paper marbling, paste paper, bookbinding): I primarily use a variation of the Turkish method of paper marbling with a carrageenan bath, alumed paper, and acrylic paint. I also use acrylic paint in making paste papers. I sell the hand-decorated paper and cards, framed art, and journals made with the marbled paper. Journals are handbound with a variety of bindings, papers, covers, closures, and embellishments.
