My work is uniquely detailed abstract art that reflects my passion for color and movement. As a former Kathak classical Indian dancer, the elements that attracted me to the dance followed me into painting: geometric shapes, flow, intricacy, and costume. The paintings are a visual meditation on the excitement of stillness, and the exploring and experimenting during the process is permeated by my goal of referencing the unseen through layers and visual texture. Shapes emerge organically, and the “character” of each piece unfolds through the play between random and deliberate and the mysterious partnership of conscious and unconscious. I love the ambiguity of spatial relationships because when you’re not certain if something is in front or in back, emerging or receding, the mind stops, and there is a chance for presence and newness. I use a variety of media in the paintings: water-mixable oil, acrylic, paper, thread, ink, and pen. The goal is beauty that draws you in and holds your attention up close in curiosity and intimacy.
