Opportunity Location

Architecture & Collage is a four-week virtual/online collage artist residency from Kolaj Institute taking place 13 August-3 September 2026. The residency is intended for artists with a practice of collage and/or architecture who want to explore the intersections of the two mediums. Residencies are open to any artist over the age of 21 from anywhere in the world.

In this residency, artists will consider architecture as building technology, visual art, culture, history, storytelling, folklore, and preservation. Through presentations, discussion prompts, guest speakers, and collage-making activities, artists will explore how buildings, rooms, neighborhoods, and places shape relationships to memory, identity, and community. Activities may include photographing an element of place, creating a relationship map, building a material inventory, connecting one’s artist practice to architectural ideas, and developing a final artwork that speaks to the intersection of Architecture and Collage.

The residency is led by Seth Ter Haar, Managing Director of Kolaj Institute and 2024-2026 Fellow of Docomomo Wisconsin. Guest speakers will include Ric Kasini Kadour, Director of Kolaj Institute, and Clive Knights, collage artist and founding director of the School of Architecture at Portland State University. Sessions take place Thursday, 13 August; Thursday, 20 August; Thursday, 27 August; and Thursday, 3 September 2026, 7–9 PM EDT. Deadline to Apply: Tuesday, 14 July 2026. Final Deadline to Apply: Tuesday, 28 July 2026. The cost is $600 USD per artist, with a limited number of grants available to offset the cost for those in need. Artists may apply through the application link on the call page.
