Brushes & Blooms is a multi-day plein air painting event hosted by the Amana Arts Guild in collaboration with Colonies in Bloom, a community-led initiative dedicated to enhancing the beauty of the Amana Colonies through seasonal plantings and landscape stewardship. Together, the two organizations bring art and horticulture into dialogue, celebrating the region’s gardens, public spaces, farms, and historic architecture at peak bloom.

Professional and emerging artists from across the region are invited to paint outdoors throughout the Amana Colonies, working on-site in public view. Residents and visitors are encouraged to observe the creative process as it unfolds, offering informal opportunities for conversation and connection between artists and the community. Art is encountered where it is made—along village streets, in gardens, and near historic sites—rather than only after completion.

The event culminates in a public exhibition and awards celebration featuring completed works created during the event. Artwork is available for purchase, supporting participating artists and generating revenue for the Amana Arts Guild to sustain future arts programming. The exhibition also draws visitors during the height of the tourist season, contributing to the local creative economy.

By aligning plein air painting with the visual impact of Colonies in Bloom, Brushes & Blooms highlights the shared role of art, nature, and stewardship in shaping a vibrant sense of place. The event is intentionally accessible, family-friendly, and rooted in community pride, reinforcing the Amana Colonies as a destination for cultural and artistic engagement.
