I was born and raised on a small farm in Iowa. Always involved in my parents’ farm and 4-H, I have always had a soft spot for everything living. In school at Iowa State University, I was always able to convince my professors that every project had to incorporate pigs. I was grieving the loss of 4-H, and the connection I had to the animals I cared for each summer, so I was continually drawn to them in my art. I found that creating artwork about the animals I missed was a type of therapy for me. Over time my art grew from representing my personal relationships with animals, to representing all human connection to animals.
I create wheel thrown, utilitarian pottery, meant to be used in a person’s daily life. I glaze my pottery in custom glazes made to accent the animal imagery on top. I fire my pots in an electric kiln to cone 6, and decorate each piece with black iron oxide decals. My decals are made digitally based on original acrylic paintings I have made. I have over 300 images in my catalog, and each one has a unique story of human connection. My ceramic forms are a canvas to display and spread my animal creations, and love of nature.
