I want to inspire a sense of childlike wonderment by using cross-cultural fairytale and mythological references to create new narratives to reflect on. I’m interested in creating work that is both whimsical and dark, innocent yet feral, of characters that exist within dream-like environments.
We all wander a psychic wilderness of sorts. I try to create that wilderness by bringing a myriad of mediums together with materials exposed to and collected from nature. I’m also fascinated by abandoned houses and similar structures that are in a state of emerging from or back into nature.
My use of mixed media sculpture stems from an endless curiosity of materials and how to combine them to achieve my goals, whether these are visual effects such as ice, wrinkled skin, or seaweed, or physical ones such as creating eyes, hair or problems of scale, weight, or outdoor use. The stylization of my figurative work is often associated with faeries, puppets, and illustrations found in children’s books; yet with a hint of realism that unsettles.
I find that creating in sculptural form is necessary to create an immersive experience, shifting the space they occupy partly into another reality along with the viewer, often to create stories of their own.
